Most Fire Companies, at one
time or another run across unusual calls that, well, are
unusual. One of ours was when we were called to a home on
the outskirts of town to rescue a woman whom was up to her
elbow in porcelain. Seems she had dropped a ring in the
commode and was trying to retrieve it. Unfortunately, for
her, she was unable to extricate her arm as well. We saved
her arm, but the commode was not as lucky.
Another of ours was well
documented. The following photos illustrate one of our more
famous rescues. At the edge of town, sometime in the winter
months, just as the chill in the air was beginning to glaze
the top of a nearby pond, a little duck spent a few too many
minutes frolicking in the refreshing water and became
entrapped. A call went out to the local fire company (who
else would you call? ducks in a pond aren't much different
than cats in a tree).

Upon arrival on
the scene, the Incident Commander assessed the
situation. What to do, what to do? This was
before we had our Tower, so an easy pluck the
duck was not an option. No, this was a time to
improvise... |

The Incident
Commander somehow persuaded the victim to grab
hold of the lifeline. |
|
| It seems to be
working. The firefighters gently work him to the
edge of the pond, being careful not to ruffle
his feathers. |

Success is
finally had! Goes to show, firefighting isn't
all it's quacked up to be! |
